Is Our City Headed in the Right Direction?

A Municipal Councillor is your direct representative. They make decisions on the services that affect you and your family on a daily basis, from the water that comes out of your tap, the sewers that carry it away, snow removal, traffic management, community centres and parks to traffic management & road and sidewalk safety.

Who is Marty Paulin?

A University of Toronto graduate, Bell Canada Technical Support Management retiree, and local volunteer who is beholding to no special interest group or developer.

Marty grew up on a family fruit farm in Niagara on the Lake, learning early on the values of hard work and community dedication. For over 20 years, Marty and his wife have raised their family in Richmond Hill, living across Wards 1, 4, and 5. Today, they are proud parents of two sons, both Software Developers, and grandparents of one grandson.

As a firm believer in the power of public services, Marty saw his sons learn to swim at Richmond Hill pools, skate at local arenas, ride bikes on their neighborhood court, play softball on community teams, and work their first jobs as carriers for the Richmond Hill Liberal newspaper. He is committed to ensuring future generations have these same opportunities.

Marty pledges to be an active representative of the people, ensuring that your voices are heard directly on council. He believes in hands on local advocacy and transparent communication.

Evaluate Ward 5: The Questions We Must Ask Ourselves

To choose the right representation, we must honestly evaluate where Richmond Hill stands today. Click on each core area below to view the questions we face and Marty's direct plan of action.

Community Safety & Pedestrian Rights

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Do you feel safer in your homes and when out and about in the community? (Do you feel safe leaving your car parked in your driveway or condo parking lot?)
  • Are you satisfied with the current lack of enforcement of the City’s “Micromobility” strategy? Have you walked down your local sidewalk and encountered an e bike or e scooter rider yelling at you to get out of their way?

Marty’s Stance & Plan:

Our sidewalks belong to pedestrians, children, seniors and families, not high-speed e-bikes, electric scooters, electric unicycles etc. As Chair of the Road Watch Committee, Marty has spent decades working with York Regional Police. He will demand strict enforcement (by City By-Law staff and York Regional Police) of the City of Richmond Hill Micromobility guidelines and the Highway Traffic Act and explore means for York Regional Police to helping to secure our driveways and parking lots against rising auto theft.

Fiscal Responsibility & Tax Value

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Do you feel you are getting good value for your tax dollars?
  • Are you aware of the City’s financial health and budgeting priorities? (View City Financial Report)

Marty’s Stance & Plan:

Voters deserve a counsellor with real fiscal experience, not a career politician. Marty will participate in ensuring your tax dollars are spent wisely while ensuring the maintenance of public facilities and services.

Zoning, Housing & Smart Development

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Are you satisfied with the placement and type of housing in our city?
  • Are you pleased with the city’s development strategy? (View Municipal Benchmarking Study)
  • Do you feel we have a homeless crisis in the city, and are we addressing its root causes?

Marty’s Stance & Plan:

Marty is beholding to no developer or special interest group. He will push for smart development and growth that balances the need for respect of existing neighbourhoods while prioritizing affordable family starter home options rather than the willy-nilly placement of high-density towers that strain resources.

Transit, Infrastructure & Sidewalk Maintenance

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Has traffic congestion in Richmond Hill gotten better or worse in the past 4 years?
  • Do you feel Richmond Hill’s current public transit strategy is meeting the needs of our community today and in the future?
  • Are you satisfied with the level and quality of snow removal this past Winter?
  • Are our parks and green spaces in better or worse condition?

Marty’s Stance & Plan:

Local services are the foundation of community health. Marty plans to make certain our snow clearing contracts ensure responsive winter plowing and snow removal if necessary. Traffic mitigation planning is a must for congested thoroughfares. Effective traffic speed controls require implementation and enforcement while realizing that planting a stop sign at every intersection is not the answer. Local transit route planning is required to meet the needs of Ward 5 commuters.

Trustworthy Council & Responsive Staff

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Do you feel the existing City Council members are honest, trustworthy, and responsive to your family’s needs?
  • If you have had interaction with City of Richmond Hill staff in the past 4 years, do you feel they are responsive to your needs?
  • Are you aware of Richmond Hill’s declining position in the ranking of Ontario Communities?

Marty’s Stance & Plan:

Ward 5 deserves an honest representative (without a criminal record). Marty pledges to assist citizens who contact him directly by email, phone, or in person. He offers a personal commitment: "If I don't have the answer, I will get it for you." Having fostered strong relationships with current Council members, City Staff, and York Regional Police, Marty is ready to work collaboratively from Day 1 to enhance Ward 5 representation on Richmond Hill Council and to make certain citizen requests for service garner the efficient and prompt attention citizens demand.

To sum it up in one sentence:

Is our city headed in the right direction?
